Author interview:

You’re a mystery/thriller author. Why did you choose this genre?

I’ve always loved a puzzle to solve. What intrigues me most about mysteries and thrillers is not so much the crime itself but the psychology behind it. What drives a person to murder and why are they lacking in restraint?

Tell us the difference between mystery and thriller?

As I see it, in a mystery the reader usually does not know the identity of the killer and follows the clues all the way to the end. A thriller often reveals the killer’s identity early on, and the thrill is in the chase. Thrillers also tend to be more dynamic and with a global impact, whereas a mystery is more local.

What stories have you published?

I currently have three full-length mystery/thrillers and one short story published. Two of the novels are in the Jackson mystery series, and can also be easily read as stand-alones. The short story is a suspense based on a difficult social issue and a new challenge for me. I’m used to writing full novels, where I have pages to develop my characters and plot. A short is quite different. An author has to nail it down quickly in a short. I enjoyed the challenge.

Give a tagline for each. Where can we find them?

Madness and Murder is the first in the Jackson mystery series: San Francisco, thriller, threatened by a persistent shadow.
No Alibi: Missing San Francisco pilot, a dead lover, a wife with no alibi.
Hide and Seek (newest book and 2nd in the Jackson series): Would you hide from your killer or seek him out?
False Pretense (short story): One night out changed everything.
The titles are all available at Amazon.com, and more information can be found on my website at www.jfhilborne.com

What else do you have planned?

I’m currently working on my 4th thriller, called Stone Cold. This one is set in the rural English countryside, which is quite a change from my previous San Francisco settings. I’m looking forward to spending time there doing research.

You’re from the UK. Why did you choose San Francisco as a setting for your earlier books?

When I first visited San Francisco in 2005, I loved it immediately for its diversity. It reminds me a lot of home and it struck as a mysterious place, especially Alcatraz. A person can move so easily, it seemed the ideal setting for a thriller.

What one tip would you share with a new writer?

Network. Writing is a solitary profession. You’ll have good days and bad days. Your network of authors is invaluable on the bad days. And no writer knows everything there it know about writing.
